Engineering, Construction and Mining R&D – How Modelling can be R&D.
Engineering, Construction and Mining can all be highly innovative fields – constant market pressures, challenging sites and increasing costs. R&D is a key way companies and industry suppliers innovate, developing new ideas to improve safety, save time or improve processes and quality.
Modelling is a heavily used type of tool in each of these industries – helping design and problem solving – but can it be R&D?
Modelling can be part of an R&D activity when the model can’t solve the problem. If all you need to do is collect data, input it into the model, and use the model’s output data to solve your problem, then this won’t be enough. Models use existing industry knowledge and expertise to determine their results from a given set of input data.
But where modelling can be part of R&D activities, is where the model can’t solve your problem but you need to do some experimenting to validate whether the model works for your site, or to refine the model to help solve your problem. Modelling as part of your core R&D can help you along the path to generating new knowledge, helping to do preliminary investigations of hypothesised options and refine hypotheses and experiments, or helping to analyse and evaluate your experimental results.
R&D Certainty specialises in working with businesses which are making R&DTI claims to make sure they can identify what the technical challenges are in their projects, and what the R&D activities they need to plan, document and execute to solve these challenges.
